Alright Chomster...

My old man keeps telling me that I should stop watching your lectures and reading your writings... he says it's frazzling my brains! In a way he's right... I used to think that the world was f**ked and that there was no way of changing it... And when I first started reading you (and others Fisk, Pilger, Roy, Klein, Tariq Ali etc) it used to depressed me... but then I realised that power structures depend on people believing that the world is as it is, and will always be so and that people had better just shut up and get a sh**ty job... if power structures didn't keep up this myth, well, there wouldn't be power structures (as we know 'em now)... all that would be left is a fresh clean smell!!!

Well... I know you don't like apparent significance attached to personalities, but a little birthday greeting can't hurt... so...

Happy Birthday Boss...

Peace and Love from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, UK...

Here's to a world without money or guns...

Cheers,

Bing!x

What good fortune to have lived during the time when Noam Chomsky has made himself available, as a teacher and guide, to innumerable people. Thank you, Noam. You are the finest hero imaginable.

Noam chomsky is definitely a hero of our times. His contributions in various fields are awesome. His sympathy towards the underdog and un-compromised dissent towards all kinds of hegemonic structures are adorable traits for the youth , forward looking individuals and groups across the globe. He is a rare personality blessed with eternal youth perpetually experimenting with truth. I wish him at least two more decades of productive life span so that he can continue his contributions to save the mankind from impending perils. We wish this living legend many many happy returns of the day...

I'm embarrassed to say I've not yet read any of your books, but your persistent critique of misused power, and championing of unpopular causes, has been a challenge and an inspiration. You remind us not to let indignation squeeze out analysis, but to understand the world as it is and respond with humanity.

We few anarchists in Nepal appreciate Chomsky: it may sound cheesy but he was like a torch in the darkness. When we were trying to make sense of it all during times of resistance in Nepal - we read Chomsky.

We - educated brown people - thought we had a 'liberal' educational approach regards issues of racism, class, and politics. Then we read Chomsky - an old white Jewish man in specs from a colonized country - who helped to remind us there's still a lot we have left to do.

He makes us laugh at our own tragedy - sometimes reading him is like watching a good episode of the Simpsons. And without that funniness, I might have put the first book down.

It's time our band wrote a song about Chomksy. However for now, while we get a vicious attack of writer's block on the lyrics, 'Happy Birthday to you...' does the job.

I feel odd addressing you like this but please forgive the familiarity.

My name is Ro Rai. You don't know me, my family or friends here in London, or back in Nepal where I am from originally, but many of us have been informed, inspired and galvanised by your work. It might seem strange to you, but we feel we know you in some small way. You have touched us all with your strength of purpose and your courageous and unremitting commitment to truth. You are a presence in our lives.

So this short note is to thank you for all that you have done and continue to do. There are many of us out here who may not take the time to say so, but we admire and continue to be inspired by you and the example that you set.

As they say in Nepal, 'Dhanyabad Noam Uncle!'

Thank you and very best wishes.

A great encouragement that someone of such distinction as a pioneer in his own field should then turn to providing trenchant criticism exposing the idiocies of international power politics today.

Noam, you sparked my interest for politics six years ago, and you continue to inspire me to this day.

Discovering your books had a life-changing impact on me and I am deeply grateful for the work you have done for us.

I wish you all the best and hope you stay with us for a long time still!

Reading Chomsky for the first time was such a relief. Here were my vague feelings distilled into lucid, deeply researched words. It was a calm warm voice talking of insanities and making sense of policies that had made no sense to me.

Chomsky for me is a singularly inspiring example of what's possible in terms of combining rational analysis at the highest level with a passionate and fearless voice for social change. His career sets the standard for academics from all fields who seek to engage with the world and question the power structures that constrain it.

Among other things, you taught me that the Iraq war was about power not just oil, and helped me understand more about what's wrong with the media.

Thank you, Noam Chomsky, for being an infinite source of sanity to turn to, when it all seems too much!

Love and respect.

Trying to understand what you have been saying and writing has been the most fulfilling and transforming intellectual experience of my life. Your example of intellectual fearlessness, rigorous rationality, personal generosity and unyielding commitment to grassroots social change has set a standard that inspires us and challenges us. Several generations of activists are in your debt. I'm certainly one of them.
